Australians are demanding more action on the housing crisis.
For the first time ever, 100 Australians - from all backgrounds, ages and politics - came together to see if it was possible to put their differences aside and find uncommon ground on housing reform.
People demand more action on the housing crisis; prioritising faster and increased house building as the principal measures to urgently address the ‘worst housing crisis in recent history’.
This was the overwhelming message from 100 representative Australians participating in the country’s first ever national AMPLIFICATION on Housing, where the public took charge of the longstanding crisis; deliberating on real solutions to tackle one of Australia’s biggest challenges.
They’ve made the tough calls, prioritised what matters, and delivered a clear mandate for action.
We need more homes, and we need them now!
How did we get there, and what comes next?
Following months seeking out many different voices and sharing views on the topic of housing with our online community and housing experts, on 22-23 February 2025, AMPLIFY convened an in-person, nation-first housing deliberation. A 2-day event where 100 randomly-selected Australians, representing the Australian community at large, came together to find uncommon ground on housing reform, and uncover unexpected solutions to help Australians get a fair go at housing affordability, housing choice and housing security.
We had every generation covered from Baby Boomers to Gen Z. We had a complete mix of political views, housing status and backgrounds. We had people who have experienced homelessness. We had tenants and we had landlords. We had reform experts and we had reform challengers.
These people had never met before - on any given day, their paths might never cross. But in just 48 hours, new friendships were made, powerful stories were shared, and perspectives shifted. People walked in with strong views, and walked out with even stronger understanding.
Investors and renters actually listened to each other. YIMBYs and NIMBYs found uncommon ground. Boomers now see what Gen Z is up against, while Gen Z has a whole new respect for the generations before them.
Our reform experts, which included some of Australia’s top housing policy and industry minds, presented their cases to the community and provided the evidence behind their reforms, and the impact they may have.
The 100 participants deliberated over 13 housing reforms, shortlisted from 46 submitted. 13 real solutions to tackle one of Australia’s biggest challenges, and aligned around a clear consensus: the community demands more action on housing reform.
The 100 participants’ top housing reform demands are:
Fab Pre-Fab (Blueprint Institute) – Unlocking cutting-edge technology to build more homes, more easily.
Commuter Communities (YIMBY Melbourne) – Allowing more homes in walkable neighbourhoods near transport links.
Renters’ Rights (CEDA - Committee for Economic Development of Australia) – Greater protections to ensure renters have a place to call home.
Target 10% (Everybody’s Home) – A long-term ambition to significantly increase the proportion of social housing by 2045.
More Bang for Your Block (CEDA - Committee for Economic Development of Australia) – Making it easier to build granny flats, tiny homes, and garage conversions.
Across the wider suite of reforms, the results were resounding: over 70% of participants supported all 13 reforms on the table, covering reform to tax and immigration. You can find more information for all reforms here.
In the coming days and weeks, we’ll share more on which reforms deserve urgent attention. But one thing is already clear: we need more spaces where real people can contest ideas, based on facts, and share insights from lived experience with each other.
We have all worked hard to get here. But we've got plenty more to do. The housing crisis simply cannot be solved without the community.
